Beds and compost

Day 68

May 8, 2018

The lake is so tranquil and gorgeous at sunrise. I feel like a farmer’s wife these days. 10 hours a day outside tending the soil. Rise with the sun. Work the earth. It is everything I dream of sinking into and learning (by trial and error). Today I prepared the raised beds. Resealed them with non-toxic cedar oil to withstand the weather. And also did the deck chairs. I had painted a bench and added sealant to it and placed it on what we call “our fairy path.” Then it was time prepare the beds…add soil, compost and fertilizer. I have been making compost the past year, so to finally see it decomposed/useable made me elated! New rules for compost…no meat (whomever threw a t-bone in there…yuck!), remove all stickers off produce peels (they do not biodegrade), cut things smaller like avocado pits as they take too long to decompose. I am surprised that the corn cobs disappeared. And always keep extra stock of leaves after fall to add into the compost heap and make less wet.

Mr Houdini keeps tabs on the morning birds.

This chipmunk on our deck was far too friendly. I saw him up here 3 different times, while we were right there. Cutie, though ain’t he?

Stunning. I am ever grateful for this morning view!

Seal the spice beds on the balcony.

Seal the vegetable beds.

i paint everything

I painted this bench. Sealed it and put it on “the fairy path.”

My homemade compost! Made of all the vegetable scraps from the past year plus leaves from the oak tree. Perfection.

Fertilizer of choice. Read many great reviews. Smells fecund the next day, but that is what the good stuff does! Mix this into my organic soil from Gardenerssupply.com (the cheapest I could find with a code delivered to my door). And then compost. These veggies are going to explode.
